Hancock

Saw it last night with Chibi and some of her coworkers

Overall I liked the movie. It was original and touched on non-cliche superhero trends, twisting them a'la Unbreakable. Will Smith is a great actor and Charlize Theron actually does a great job in an action sort role, which I'm not used to seeing her in.

That being said, this movie stepped beyond the whole "lets leave it open for a sequel" to the point of this feeling more like the pilot to a tv series, rather then a movie. Lots LOTS of concepts were brought up that would be cool to explore but never really expanded on. The story in the movie was pretty contained like an episode, and left you waiting for more details, but not really more of that particular plot.

Here's where I get geeky. Spoilers!
I LOVE that they were gods that morphed into basically superheroes. And I mean morphed in people's concepts and minds, not in reality.

I LOVE that the whole funky family thing was touched on. Back with Roman, Greek and Egyptian (and lots of others) gods and goddesses they usually came in pairs and they were quite often brother and sister and married. So I love that the concept was included, and especially how they handled it. The writer was smart, the brothers and sisters things was mentioned once to be caught, but it was faint, so people wouldn't get all squicked out by it.

I LOVE the whole trend recently of the male main character being a dork and funny (like Brad Pit in Mr and Mrs Smith) while the female character is the more powerful and competent one. It's about time Hollywood! Speaking as a kid who grew up wishing there were more fantasy action-y type movies with female main characters, it's definintly about time.

I LOVE Will Smith drunk. Hilarious in the opening scene! Beyond that, but definintly including that, he just really kicked ass. He can do nearly any role and he's been able to pull them all off, which really keeps impressing me. I don't just see the movies because Chibi loves him, I do actually think he's a really damn good actor too.

The only thing I wasn't too thrilled about was the bad guy. He wasn't really focused on and caught me as an after thought or a hint toward a bigger story. But since my brain dropped into tv pilot mode, it didn't bother me too much, since I was really much much more interested in Will Smith's character anyhoo.

Over all? Rent it or see it in the cheap theaters... but I wouldn't necessarily pay more then $6 for the ticket.

Hancock looks like interesting spin on the latest superhero movie craze... if nothing else at least Will Smith tends to be pretty funny
